As a dedicated member of the Nottingham community, I find myself deeply troubled by the recent revelations concerning the management of our cherished Town Beach. The article from the Nottingham Substack blog has shed light on a series of missteps and oversights by both the Board of Selectmen (BOS) and the Director of Parks and Recreation that cannot be ignored.

Lack of Transparency and Communication

The BOS’s decision-making process regarding the beach access has been alarmingly opaque. For over half a century, residents have enjoyed uninterrupted access to the beach, a tradition that fosters community spirit and well-being. The sudden shift to annual agreements with the landowner, without prior community consultation or clear communication, raises serious questions about the BOS’s commitment to transparency and public engagement.

Neglect of Due Diligence

It’s disheartening to learn that there may have been a lack of thorough investigation into the historical rights-of-way and easements that have allowed public access to the beach for decades. This oversight suggests a failure to protect the town’s interests and a disregard for the community’s longstanding use of the property.

Questionable Leadership in Parks and Recreation

The Director of Parks and Recreation holds a pivotal role in ensuring our public spaces are accessible and well-maintained. The current situation indicates a lapse in proactive leadership and a failure to advocate effectively for the community’s needs. The absence of a strategic plan to secure permanent access to the beach reflects poorly on the department’s foresight and dedication.

Impact on Community Trust

These administrative shortcomings have not only jeopardized access to a beloved community resource but have also eroded public trust in our local government. The community deserves leaders who are transparent, diligent, and responsive to the needs of their constituents.

Call to Action

It’s imperative that the BOS and the Director of Parks and Recreation take immediate steps to rectify this situation. This includes:

  • Conducting a comprehensive review of historical access rights and easements.

  • Engaging in open dialogues with the community to discuss concerns and potential solutions.

  • Developing a long-term strategy to ensure permanent, unimpeded access to the Town Beach for all residents.

Our community’s unity and resilience are our greatest strengths. By holding our leaders accountable and advocating for transparent governance, we can work together to preserve the cherished traditions and public spaces that define Nottingham.
